Ramadan: message from David Cameron

"I want to send my very best wishes to everyone observing the holy month of Ramadan.

This is an incredibly special time of year for Muslims at home and abroad a time for charity, for contemplation and community.

First, charity. This is one of the things that Islam is all about. Here in Britain, Muslims are our biggest donors -- they give more to charity than any other faith group. We see this spirit of giving all year round from the mosques running sports clubs for local children to the Muslim groups selling poppies for Remembrance Day, to those people from around the country who put their wellies on, rolled their sleeves up, and went to help the families hit hardest by this winter's storms.

Ramadan is a time when that spirit comes to the fore and I am so proud when I hear, every year, about the millions of pounds raised for good causes for those less fortunate than us here in Britain, and those who are suffering in wars and in famines overseas.

Second, Ramadan is a time for contemplation to fast, and to pray, and to think deeply about others

This Ramadan, I hope that we can reflect upon a key aspect of our shared history, the bravery of those who fought and died for our freedoms nearly 100 years ago. Just days after Eid, we will be marking 100 years since the First World War. More than a million men and boys from India fought with our troops during that conflict and many thousands of them were Muslims. They travelled across the world to fight to defend our freedom, guided and sustained by their bravery, comradeship, and, above all, by their faith. Their selflessness and their courage helped to secure the liberties we all enjoy today, so this Ramadan -- and this centenary -- we will remember them and reflect upon their sacrifice.

Third, Ramadan is a time for community. And there is nothing that exemplifies this more than those nightly afters, when the fast is broken, the dates are opened, and all that great food is served.

Last year I was delighted to see how many community iftars were taking place across the country, in mosques and in community centres, in parks and even in tents. Again this year Government is supporting the Big Iftar programme, with hundreds more communities, from Leeds to Luton, Woking to Manchester, throwing open their doors, so that people of all faiths and none can break bread and get to know their neighbours.

So wherever you are this holy month, let me wish you, once again, Ramadan Mubarak."

A Chinese commits suicide after losing thousands of yuan in gambling

A Chinese student has taken his own life after losing 20,000 yuan (2,400 euros, $ 3,300) in the World Cup betting Brazil, as recorded by the local press.

He was identified as Lin, a young student at a university in southern China, who jumped from the seventh floor of a building of its campus on Monday, the newspaper Shibao Xinxi reported.

"He spoke about ten minutes on the phone and I heard him plead," Do not oblige me, give me two more days to pay you. " Then he hung up and I saw him get up quickly and disappeared", assured a witness to the same newspapper.

Lin was immediately taken to hospital in the city of Panyu in Guangdong, but could not do anything to save his life.

"He had borrowed a lot of money (to bet) with a very high interest", said a friend of Lin, who estimated he had lost about 20,000 yuan (2,400 euros) betting on several World Cup matches.

Although the selection of China does not participate in the competition, there are millions of football fans addicted to betting. In fact, only the state-controlled betting have reached this weekend's four billion yuan (477 million euros).

Stern shot himself after seing his wife with DiCaprio

Andrew Stern, 40, the entrepreneur husband of model Katie Cleary, 32 shot himself dead at a shooting range after his model wife was pictured cozying up to Leonardo DiCaprio had filed for divorce weeks before, MailOnline can reveal.

Stern shot himself in the head at the Target Range in Van Nuys, Los Angeles, and according to local reports another man killed himself earlier reported the same magazine.

A spokesman for Cleary claimed the pictures were harmless but friends of his told TMZ that he felt humiliated for the katie's young entrepreneur husband.

Katie Cleary was pictured cuddling up to DiCaprio and Entourage star Adrian Grenier in Cannes, before her husband Andrew Stern killed himself at a California shooting range on Sunday.

He had filed court papers to end the couple's less-than-four-year marriage just weeks before the images emerged, according to court documents.

And Cleary and Stern were still in the process of dividing up their assets when the 40-year-old entrepreneur took his own life with a bullet to the head at the San Fernando Valley gun range.

The divorce papers read: 'The exact nature and extent of [Stern's] separate assets including, without limitation, funds and/or other property interests due to [Stern] from [Cleary] by way of recoupment, misappropriation... are presently under determination.'
Cleary and Stern, who had appeared on Bravo's dating show Millionaire Matchmaker, married the model on July 31, 2010.
The court documents state the pair separated on April 3, 2014.

Cleary and Stern, who had appeared on Bravo's dating show Millionaire Matchmaker, married the model on July 31, 2010.
The court documents state the pair separated on April 3, 2014.

However, Cleary's rep told TMZ the couple broke for a while ago and said Cleary and Grenier had been friends for sometime. The rep said that Cleary and Dicaprico had only met the night they were photograph but insisted they were innocently discussing animal conservation and nothing else.
However, the celebrity website cites sources as saying Stern felt embarrassed by the pictures and was suffering depression.
Interviews with the couple's friends revealed he was 'suffering significant stress over marital problems' and had a history of depression, TMZ earlier reported, while others said he had financial strains.

Katie, who is from Glenview, Illinois, appeared on the first series of America's Next Top Model while she was still a college student, before landing the role of 'briefcase beauty' on popular game show Deal Or No Deal.
The brunette beauty has since had minor roles in The Break Up, Iron Man 2 and Entourage, while appearing in advertising campaigns for Sketchers, Nike and Elastiderm.
She was also spotted out and about with Entourage cast member Adrian Grenier while in Cannes.

Stern had set up his own successful marketing firm after graduating from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and moving to Los Angeles.

Initially working for other companies, he started his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, Taco Bell, Southwest Airlines and Pepsi, according to an obituary posted on Performance Marketing Insider by a business friend, Pace Lattin.

After working with professional athletes including Kobe Bryant and Anna Kournikova at Broadband Sports, he joined L90 Worldwide as a sales and media planner, it noted.
In 2002, he founded Seed Corn Advertising and went on to produce movies, launch restaurants, real estate and 'brokering exotic cars', the obituary said.

He also featured on Season 2 of the hit TV show 'Millionaire Matchmaker' before marrying Cleary, 'the love of his life', Lattin wrote.
'Andrew kept his original company, never sold out, always was making money and working hard,' he wrote.

A terrible announcement of sale of girls from Syria published in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, has raised a wave of strong reviews and has attracted the attention of human rights activists on the issue of abuse of Syrian women reported RT Actualidad.

According to Press TV. (The information was first reported by the Iran's Arabic channel Al Alam), some activists in social networks already rated the advertising as a form of trading that takes advantage of the crisis in Syria and the basic needs of refugees in the Arabic country.

According to the announcement, the price of each girl is 10,000 Saudi rials (nearly $ 9,000).

With the increase of violence in Syria, many Syrians have been forced to flee to neighboring countries in search of safety and security. Nearly a third of the Syrian population, seven million people have been displaced by the conflict in the country, according to data available to the UN. Of these, five million are still living in Syria, while about two million have fled to neighboring countries, mainly Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, Iran and Egypt.

At the beginning of the year the chain Al Alam reported cases of rape and sexual abuse by Saudi men in the Syrian refugee camp in Jordan Zaatari.

On 27 November, the international organization of Human Rights Watch expressed concern for the safety of women refugees fleeing the civil war in Syria. The organization said that abuses had occurred also in Lebanon.

French Revolution in El Salvador

A French whirlwind sweeps Switzerland in Salvador. Giroud, Matuidi, Valbuena, a shining Benzema and Sissoko did the 5 french goals. Dzemaili and Xhaka did the 2 swiss goals.

Arsenal's Olivier Giroud broke the deadlock with a stunning header before Blaise Matuidi blasted the second 66 seconds later after poor goalkeeping.

Karim Benzema had a penalty saved before Mathieu Valbuena added a third.

Goals by Benzema and Moussa Sissoko made it 5-0 before late consolations from Blerim Dzemaili and Granit Xhaka.

France's dominance was every bit as emphatic as the scoreline at Arena Fonte Nova suggests.

France all but secured a place in the last 16 as three first-half goals against Switzerland helped them to an easy Group E win in Salvador. We can simply say 'La france est de retour!'

The hidden face of Facebook

An investigation by many independent organizations and media has confirmed the suspicions of many users about how the major social networks like Facebook and MySpace delivers private and relevant information to consumers advertising company or to the CIA without the user consent.

As users generally give their real names, details, pictures, videos, messages and data... it is easy to place them next to a network. This is how Facebook provides the link between the user and a product. The CIA use this information in a way that Julian assange explain in this video, and where the advertising companies receive this valuable information that can be used to find suitable product to these individual profiles.

One of the biggest fears of social network users, especially given the high information published and the high degree of privacy that this information has, is that companies behind these platforms trading are trading with data and your information can come to anybody at any time. These companies will now know your name, taste, political view, religion, future plans, kids...

Earlier and after an internal investigation. The Wall Street Journal did officially confirmed that Facebook, MySpace and other social networks sell private and sensitive information without informing the users.

In the case of Facebook, the investigation showed that the company was going even further than its competitors because the owner not only knew who did click on what but also very detailed information such as which page was been visited and viewed at the time of the click. Unknowingly, with a short path click, the user gives the advertiser a complete profile of who he is.

In January 2008, Tom Hodgkinson published an article in The Guardian denouncing these unhealthy practices. Later it was the turn of the wikileaks founder Julian Assange who denounced these activities. At that time they were greeted with skepticism, but now they have been confirmed.

Spain humiliated and knocked out of World Cup (2 - 0)

source: FIFA World Cup

After a humbling 5-1 defeat by the Netherlands in their curtain-raiser, Chile stunned Spain 2-0 to secure a place in the knockout phase with a Group B game to spare and eliminate the FIFA World Cup™ holders. Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz sent the South Americans in at the break at a two-goal cushion, and though the Iberians tried relentlessly to get back into the game after the restart, they were unable to find a way past Claudio Bravo. - FIFA

"There are thousands of Chile fans pouring out of the stadium in full voice, one described to me today as the best of day of his life and they are absolutely overjoyed. Quite a contrast to the Spain fans, who are in a daze, struggling to understand how this team, who have played so well over the past six years, have crashed out.

"There is talk of an end of an era for Spain, but there will be a big night of partying ahead for these Chile fans." - Richard Conway (BBC)

Japan approves a law against child pornography but excludes the 'manga'

The Japanese Parliament approved on Wednesday a law punishable by a year in jail and fines of one million yen (about 7,218 euros) to possessing child pornography. However, the new ban will not affect the comics 'manga' or what so called 'hentai anime' in depicting children in situations of a sexual nature.

International pressure may have influenced the processing of a project to amend the existing law to punish prostitution and child pornography. With yesterday's decision, the House of Councillors gives the nod to a text that has already been approved by the House of Representatives earlier this month.

"For a long time there has been a misunderstanding of the rights of children. That's why it took so long time, "said Kiyohiko Toyama parliamentarian, member of the New Komeito and responsible for the presentation of the project, as reported by the British news agency Reuters.

However, the parliamentary Masatada Tsuchiya, a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, said to support the law, although he has expressed his frustration explaining that "The law should include the manga and anime in which children suffer abuse sex. "

Freedom of expression

"Of course that freedom of expression is important. I love the "manga", but there are so depraved things not to defend "he argued, referring to the parliamentarians who have considered legislating comics and animations would be a limitation of freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, Minister of Justice Sadakazu Tanigaki has expressed his wish that the law makes a change in the culture of commodification of children. "We must fight against the tendency to see children as sexual objects and allow people to take advantage of this commercially sexually," he praised.

In contrast, the Magazine Publishers Association of Japan has warned that the legislation "could lead to a regression of freedom of expression and limit the artists and the publishing culture." "This can not be accepted," said the association, which represents more than 90 publishers.

France 3-0 Honduras - La France est de retour!

DENIS CHARLET / AFP

Straightforward stuff in the end. France take the win to go with their cuts and bruises.

Important victory of France, who did not achieve a victory in the first game of a World Cup since France 98, when South Africa won 3-0 and, incidentally, ended up taking the tournament. Now we break down some of the key concepts and to consider over France in this World Cup.

England 1-2 Italy

Great result for Italy. England face an uphill battle though and their match against Uruguay will define their World Cup. Lose and they're gone. They need a hero  - a Sterling or a Welbeck, someone to stand up and make a name for themselves in the way Michael Owen did in 1998. Interesting times for sure.

They played well, but lost. Went for it, but lost. Had the best chance, but lost. We’ll live with that. Frankly, we’ll have to. - Dailymail

Netherlands thrash Spain (1-5)

AFP

Two goals from Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben inspired Holland to a thumping 5-1 win over Group B rivals Spain. The Dutch produced a devastating display of counter-attacking football in a wonderful second-half display to leave Spain utterly shell-shocked - who had initially opened the scoring. Spain took the lead when Diego Costa was fouled in the box by Stefan De Vrij after 26 minutes, giving Xabi Alonso the chance to score and the Real Madrid midfielder duly obliged by converting the resulting penalty past a sprawling Jasper Cillessen. Just before half-time, the Ajax goalkeeper was to thank after making a superb save to deny David Silva’s neat chip - preventing Spain from doubling their lead..

"I'm speechless. Beforehand we were talking about Louis van Gaal and Johan Cruyff bringing total football to Barcelona and the Spanish squad but tonight the Dutch got their style back. They wanted it a bit more. I'm shocked.
"That was the final we wanted to see four years ago. The man of the match was Daley Blind. He actually did what his boss was asking him to a tee." - Thierry Henry (Former France and Arsenal striker)...

Robben completed Spain's misery with 10 minutes left, collecting Sneijder's pass and then reducing Casillas and his defenders to a floundering mess as he made room for an emphatic finish. Holland might have scored two more had they been more clinical, and Spain's Fernando Torres made a woeful blunder from close range, but their statement was already well made.
