Prostitution and drugs will contribute to the GDP of a desperate Spain

Spain try to find a way to manipulate the numbers of it bad economy and will now include in their estimates of GDP revenue figures from illegal activities such as drug trafficking or prostitution.

Thus, prostitution and drug trafficking would resemble in terms of nominal GDP in sectors such as education, art activities, telecommunications and energy supply, among others.

According to the first estimate sent by the National Statistics Institute (INE) to Eurostat, the statistical agency of the European Union, the introduction of this methodology in the Spanish GDP could increase between 2.7% and 4.5%, ie between 27,000 and 45,000 million euros.

Several experts agree that the initiative would increase by 3% of national wealth. Education in Spain is a 3.03% of GDP, the supply of electricity by 3.7%, the oil industry by 2.6%, and agriculture 2.4%, reports the portal 'Bolsamania'.

By including prostitution and drug trafficking, Spain joins Estonia, Austria, Slovenia, Finland, Sweden and Norway, which already accounted for such activities in their respective economies.

However, if in theory the inclusion in the official statistics of the so called 'black economy' can be positive for European countries, some analysts warn that the initiative will not improve the overall situation. "This is not a solution to the economic slowdown in Europe. If people are forced to work illegally we can not talk about a healthy recovery in these countries", warned Athanasios Vamvakidis, chief currency strategist at Bank of America-Europe Merrill Lynch.
